Cachexia is a complex syndrome characterized by progressive muscle loss that cannot be fully reversed with nutritional support. It commonly occurs in patients with chronic underlying illnesses such as cancer, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and AIDS. The condition is driven by systemic inflammation and metabolic alterations that lead to severe wasting and weakness.
