Branched-chain amino acids
Topic
A branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) is an amino acid featuring an aliphatic side-chain with a branch, specifically a central carbon atom bound to three or more carbon atoms. Among the proteinogenic amino acids, there are three essential BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These amino acids play critical roles in muscle protein synthesis, energy production, and metabolic regulation.
