Border states (American Civil War)

Place

The border states were slave states in the Upper South that did not secede from the Union during the American Civil War. These states included Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri, as well as West Virginia after its separation from Virginia in 1863. They served as a critical geographic and political buffer between the free states of the North and the Confederate states of the South.
