Birthright citizenship, historically known as jus soli (Latin for 'right of soil'), is a rule of law that grants nationality or citizenship to any individual born within the territory of a state. It stands in contrast to jus sanguinis ('right of blood'), which determines citizenship based on the nationality of one's parents.
