Benevolence is a moral virtue characterized by a disposition to do good, show kindness, and promote the well-being of others. In ethical philosophy, it is often contrasted with self-love and is considered a foundational concept in both Western moral traditions, such as the ethics of David Hume, and Eastern philosophies, notably as the Confucian virtue of 'ren'.
