Bears are large carnivoran mammals belonging to the family Ursidae. Although only eight species are extant, they are widespread across a variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Common characteristics of modern bears include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, shaggy hair, and plantigrade paws with nonretractile claws.
