The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought December 11–15, 1862, in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia, during the American Civil War. It involved combat between the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General Ambrose Burnside, and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle resulted in a decisive Confederate victory following disastrous, futile frontal assaults by Union forces against entrenched Confederate positions.
