Battle of Antietam
Topic
The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, during the American Civil War. It was the first field army-level engagement in the Eastern Theater to take place on Union soil and remains the bloodiest single-day battle in American military history. The tactical draw resulted in a strategic Union victory, giving President Abraham Lincoln the political leverage to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
