Bacteria are ubiquitous, mostly free-living organisms often consisting of a single biological cell. They constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms, typically measuring a few micrometres in length. Among the first life forms to appear on Earth, bacteria inhabit almost every environment, including soil, water, acidic hot springs, and the deep biosphere.
