An autoimmune disease is a condition resulting from an anomalous response of the adaptive immune system, wherein it mistakenly targets and attacks healthy parts of the body. There are more than 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, which can affect nearly any part of the body. Common examples include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.
