Aromatase, also known as estrogen synthetase or estrogen synthase, is an enzyme responsible for a key step in the biosynthesis of estrogens. It is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily (specifically CYP19A1) and catalyzes the aromatization of androgens into estrogens. This enzyme is found in various tissues, including the gonads, brain, and adipose tissue, and plays a critical role in steroidogenesis.
