Antarctica is Earth's southernmost and least-populated continent, situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and containing the geographic South Pole. It is the fifth-largest continent, with about 98% of its area covered by an ice sheet that averages 1.9 kilometers in thickness. Governed internationally under the Antarctic Treaty System, it has no permanent human residents but hosts seasonal scientific research stations.
