American football, also known as gridiron football, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense attempts to advance an oval-shaped football down the field by running with or passing it, while the defense aims to stop their advance and take control of the ball. Points are scored primarily by carrying the ball into the opponent's end zone for a touchdown or kicking it through their goalposts for a field goal.
