Aluminum smelting is the industrial process of extracting pure aluminum from its oxide, alumina, primarily through the electrolytic Hall-Héroult process. The raw alumina is typically extracted from bauxite ore beforehand using the chemical Bayer process. Because the smelting process requires massive amounts of electricity, smelters are often located near major, low-cost power sources.
