The Alternative Vote (also known as instant-runoff voting or ranked-choice voting) is a single-winner electoral system where voters rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the lowest-ranked candidates are progressively eliminated and their votes redistributed until a single candidate secures a majority.
