African Americans, also referred to as Black Americans, are an American racial and ethnic group consisting of individuals with ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa. They constitute the third-largest racial and ethnic group in the United States, following White Americans and Hispanic and Latino Americans. The term generally denotes descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States, though it also encompasses black immigrants and their descendants.
