The CIA torture program, officially referred to by the U.S. government as "enhanced interrogation techniques," was a systematic program of torture and abuse of detainees conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency and other military components. Authorized in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, the program utilized methods such as waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and extreme temperatures at various black sites worldwide. The program was officially halted and condemned as torture by subsequent legislative and executive actions, including a comprehensive Senate investigation.
