An armed forces, also known collectively as a military, is a heavily armed, highly organized force primarily intended for warfare. Typically authorized and maintained by a sovereign state, its members are identifiable by distinct uniforms and organized into branches such as the army, navy, and air force. The primary task of a military is the defense of its state and its interests against external threats.
