Machiavellianism is a personality trait construct characterized by manipulativeness, indifference to morality, lack of empathy, and a calculated focus on self-interest. Developed by psychologists Richard Christie and Florence L. Geis in the 1960s, it is named after the political philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli and forms one of the traits of the Dark Triad.
