Posterior insula

The posterior insula is a subregion of the insular cortex located deep within the lateral sulcus of the brain. It serves as a primary sensory target of the spinothalamic system and is heavily involved in processing somatosensory, nociceptive (pain), vestibular, and interoceptive information. Additionally, it plays a critical role in detecting internal bodily states and coordinating behavioral adaptations to aversive stimuli.
