Von Economo neurons, also known as spindle neurons, are a specialized class of mammalian cortical neurons characterized by a large, spindle-shaped cell body with a single apical axon and a single basal dendrite. They are primarily located in the anterior cingulate cortex and frontoinsular cortex, and are thought to play a key role in social cognition, empathy, and intuitive decision-making.
