Sleep spindles are bursts of neural oscillatory activity generated by the interplay of the thalamic reticular nucleus and other thalamic nuclei during stage 2 NREM sleep. They typically occur in a frequency range of 11 to 16 Hz and last for at least 0.5 seconds. These brainwave patterns are believed to play a critical role in sensory gating, sleep preservation, and memory consolidation.
