The Confederate States of America was an unrecognized breakaway republic in the Southern United States that existed from 1861 to 1865. It was formed by eleven southern states that seceded from the Union, leading to the American Civil War. The Confederacy was ultimately defeated and dissolved after surrendering to Union forces.
