1919 solar eclipse expedition
Work
by Arthur Stanley Eddington, Frank Watson Dyson · 1919
The 1919 solar eclipse expedition (also known as the Eddington experiment) was an observational test of general relativity organized by British astronomers Frank Watson Dyson and Arthur Stanley Eddington. By observing the total solar eclipse of May 29, 1919, from Príncipe and Sobral, the expedition successfully measured the gravitational deflection of starlight passing near the Sun, providing the first empirical confirmation of Albert Einstein's theory.
